Each Spring the Robert Emmet Society awards an outstanding North Central Michigan College Student travel, lodging and expense money for a fall semester of study in Galway, Ireland. Students at NCMC must present an outstanding essay on the enduring values of Robert Emmet to be considered for the scholarship at GalwayMayo Institute of Technology, Galway, Ireland. Their academic record and student activities at NCMC are also considered by committee along with their performance at a personal interview with committee members. After 20 plus years,unfortunately, the pandemic has curtailed the program for the past two years but we are hopeful for a restart in the near future. The Robert Emmet Society presents an annual Irish Hoolie that has become one of the highlight of the seasonal St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The event features Irish music, song and dance, silent auction and special Irish dinner fare at a venue in Petoskey. The Annual Hoolie is the Robert Emmet Society's primary fundraiser to help fund the $5,000 necessary each year to provide the annual Robert Emmet scholars expenses for a semester at Gaiway Mayo Institute of Technology
The Society was founded in the early 1990s to honor, Robert Emmet, the namesake of Emmet County, Michigan, and to make area residents more aware of Emmet’s brief, but courageous life and his enduring legacy as a champion of freedom and democracy. Emmet’s name was given to Emmet County by the Michigan Territory legislature as part of the Great Renaming of 1843 when 16 Michigan Counties got name changes. The names of four other counties in Northern Michigan were also changed to honor the Irish homeland including Antrim, Clare, Roscommon and Wexford.
